SEATTLE – Fantastic performances by freshmen in Seattle Pacific's final 2018 home meet showcased why fans should be excited to come out to Brougham Pavilion in 2019.

McKenna Zimmermann won the balance beam and all-around titles Saturday for SPU, which topped 192 points for the fourth consecutive week in a runner-up finish to Air Force during the last women's gymnastics home event of the season.

She earned a score of 9.750 en route to a four-event total of 38.675. Both of those first-place figures were career-high marks for Zimmermann.

"McKenna had a terrific meet. She's growing into becoming a real consistent athlete, which is really nice," exclaimed SPU coach Laurel Tindall. "Her beam was an awesome routine. She hit everything, didn't have a wobble and stuck her dismount. You couldn't ask for much more than that."

Air Force, ranked fourth nationally among teams competing for the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships, compiled 192.850 points to edge No. 11 SPU. The host Falcons had a team score of 192.625, their fourth best of the year.

Anna Salamone won the vault (9.800) and tied for first on the uneven bars (9.825) with Air Force teammate Analise Howard. Tyler Davis claimed the floor exercise crown (9.875) for USAF.

Joining Zimmermann in the all-around medals were two Falcons teammates. Junior Itzia San Roman registered a second-place total of 37.975 led by a career-high 9.725 on the bars. Sophomore Darian Burns was had a third-place all-around mark of 37.850.

Zimmermann wasn't the only rookie gymnast to shine for SPU as the team's top performer in every event was a freshman. Autumn Huskie finished second on the vault (9.775), Haven Lanzador fourth on the bars (9.750) and Kylie Reese second on the floor (9.750).

They are part of a six-gymnast freshman class that comprises one-third of the SPU roster.

"It is remarkable," Tindall said of the fine results from her freshman class. "That's great and shows that we are a really young team, we knew that going into the year.

"We're still in the process of getting to know our freshman and what makes them tick and how to motivate them. I'm really glad that they were able to come through finals week and most of those freshman had a good practice yesterday."

Brittany Atchison
Saturday's meet marked the final home competition appearance for SPU's lone senior, Brittany Atchison. She participated in two events, scoring a 9.475 on the floor and 9.350 on the bars. Atchison hails from Biloxi, Mississippi.

"Britt was out last year for an injury and she's been working to get back into things this year," said Tindall. "Her bar routine is good and we're hoping that it will come together even a little better. We really would like that in our lineup."

NEXT MEET
The Seattle Pacific gymnasts begin postseason action next Saturday, March 24, at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. The six-team conference meet, hosted by Air Force, starts at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.

The MPSF meet traditionally falls at the end of SPU finals week. It fell a week later on this year's calendar. The Falcons completed their final exams on Friday.

"It's nice that it's not at the end of finals week this year. Usually the conference meet is at the end of finals week and we're traveling and missing Friday finals to travel," Tindall described. "We have three days to have everybody at workout.

"When we are in school, kids are in and out with early classes or leaving early with late classes. We haven't had a workout with everybody at the same for months. That's the thing we really like about spring break week workouts. Having everybody there will help us prepare for the conference meet."
