NCAA West Regional Information
NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament
West Regional
Brougham Pavilion/Seattle, Wash.
Friday, March 12, 2010
(No. 1 seed) Seattle Pacific 65, (No. 8 seed) Hawaii Pacific 52
SEATTLE PACIFIC HEAD COACH JULIE VAN BEEK
(On the game)
“There are 32 teams left and we’re one of them. It was kind of a strange game. We didn’t really know a lot about Hawaii Pacific. There were a lot of fouls, and we didn’t establish a tempo in the game. We played hard, but it was a hard game to get into a rhythm, and it showed. The bottom line is we keep advancing and we keep peaking.”
(On some of SPU’s top performances)
“Melissa (Reich) played unbelievable. She played real strong. That’s one of the best games she has played at SPU. And our bench gave us some really good minutes. Caitlyn Rohrbach and Nyesha Sims did a real good job for us. And (starting guard) Maddie Maloney played a real solid game. She did some things that didn’t show up in the box.”
(On facing Alaska Anchorage again)
“I think ‘let’s go.’ We’re playing and I don’t care who we play. Alaska Anchorage and us have a great tradition. The bottom line is both teams have to play their best.”
(On playing Anchorage in the semfinals after losing two straight regional finals to the Seawolves)
“Every year is different. We just have to go out there and make plays. It’s going to be who makes shots and who takes care of the ball. It’s a brand-new situation.”
(On SPU’s bench performance)
“To win a big game in the tournament, you have to have the people you usually depend on do what they do, and you have to have a couple people step up. When we beat Western Washington and beat Anchorage before, our bench gave us a big lift.”
SEATTLE PACIFIC JUNIOR CENTER MELISSA REICH
(On the game, and on her game)
“It was fun. We’ve been pushing each other every day in practice to get to this point. I give a lot of credit to our team. They push me and build my confidence. I just went out there and tried to do what I did. One of my focuses has been running the floor a lot more, and our guards are doing a good job of getting the ball up.”
(On playing Anchorage again)
“We’re happy to be at this point. We’re prepared and I think we’re ready. It will be a hard-fought battle tomorrow. Just bring it.”
HAWAII PACIFIC HEAD COACH JEFF HARADA
(On the game)
“I thought we came out a little tentative and missed a lot of shots we normally make. But we played a great team in their building and hats off to them. I'm proud of the girls, and this loss does not take away from the great season they had.”
