SEATTLE -- For Chad Meis, it was a speedy return to the indoor track.

The Seattle Pacific senior, who did not compete indoors last winter in order to focus on outdoor training, broke the school record for the mile on Saturday afternoon, clocking an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time of 4:11.39 in the season-opening UW Indoor Preview

The time for Meis (Renton, Wash/Seattle Christian HS) at the Dempsey Indoor facility on the University of Washington campus eclipsed the previous record of 4:14.07, set by Brian Cronrath in 2007. It also was the third-fastest time in Great Northwest Athletic Conference history. Meis placed 12th in his heat, which featured the runners with the fastest entry times.

Falcon junior Jacob Wahlenmaier (Everett, Wash./Cascade HS) won his heat of the mile in 4:22.47. That gave him 23rd place overall.

Justin Felt (Eugene, Ore.), an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier in the long jump last season, made his senior year debut with a leap of 22 feet, 3¾ inches (6.80 meters) to place fourth overall. Felt will have several more opportunities to meet the NCAA qualifying standards. The provisional mark is 23-2¾ (7.08 meters), which he hit right on last year. The automatic distance is 23-11½ (7.30 meters).

SPU had four other finishers -- all freshmen -- in the top 20. Nate Johnson (Boise, Idaho) was 14th in the 60 hurdles in 8.99 seconds, and Ryan Endressen (Snoqualmie, Wash/Mount Si HS) took 16th in that same event in 9.09.

Nathan Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS) was 13th in the 800 meters in 1:56.60. In the weight throw, Billy Martin (Edmonds, Wash./King’s HS) took 19th at 34 feet, 9½ inches.

The next meet for the Falcons is the UW Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30, at Dempsey Indoor.
