MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Nate Seely got the job done indoors. He figures he can get it done outdoors, too.
The Seattle Pacific freshman, who came from the fourth-seeded position to win the 800 meters at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference indoor meet in February, moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 in the conference outdoor 800 prelims on Friday night.
Seely (Lynden, Wash./Lynden HS) won his heat in 1 minute, 53.94 seconds. The only one faster was first heat winner Mike Schmidt of Western Oregon in 1:52.93.
Seely's best outdoor time is an NCAA provisional of 1:52.90, which he recorded on March 20 at the Oregon Preview in Eugene. His winning indoor time was 1:54.86.
“My goal (for Saturday's finals) is 1:51.90,” Seely said. “If I get that, I almost certainly will make it to nationals.”
Seely currently ranks 36th on the NCAA list. As of Friday night, 1:51.90 ranked No. 12. With at least 16 guaranteed admittance to nationals, the No. 16 time heading into the weekend is 1:52.15.
Seely led his heat almost all the way, and crossed the line ahead of Alaska Anchorage star Alfred Kangogo, who logged a 1:54.50.
“I was expecting them to be with me, but they weren't,” Seely said. “I was planning on being second after someone, but I was first, so that's fine.”
That's not the only No. 2 seed the Falcon men have for Saturday's finals. Freshman Ryan Endresen (Portland, Ore.) will have that spot for the 400-meter hurdles final. Endresen finished the first heat in 54.96 on Friday, trailing only Maurus Hope of Northwest Nazarene, who had a 53.25.
Senior Chad Meis (Renton, Wash./Seattle Christian HS) shattered his personal-best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish third in 9:10.84. His previous best time was 9:15.13 in the Oregon Relays on April 30. Already an NCAA provisional qualifier, that puts him in 17th nationally.
Seattle Pacific's other scorer on Friday was senior Justin Felt (Eugene, Ore.), who was seventh in the long jump at 20-11¾.
The Falcons are sixth in the team standings with 13 points through Friday's events. Western Washington leads with 91.
